Nebraska UMW Green Team

United Methodist Women is promoting "Green Teams," a program activating local United Methodist Women members to organize their communities around environmental issues impacting their area.

Sabrina Miller and Kathryn Cunningham worked through the Peace with Justice Ministries this summer to develop a certification for UMW units becoming "Green Teams." They put together the following ideas to get your unit started and become a certified Green Team!

2011 Midwest Distribution Center Trips

Two volunteer trips to the Midwest Mission Distribution Center in Illinois are offered for Nebraska women in 2011. We sew, make up UMCOR kits, build school desks, learn about many mission emphases, enjoy dorm life with activities, worship, delicious eating and laughs galore! In 2010 the group numbered 22 and the gifting we delivered from Nebraska was 868 pounds of goodwill!!! The women enjoyed each other very much and continue serving God through MMDC & UMCOR.

If you would like to be on the list for 2011, please send a deposit check for $20 to Mary Ann Bede, 7240 Carmen Drive, Lincoln, NE 68516. Please indicate your choice of April 11-14, 2011 or October 17-20, 2011. Questions? E-mail Mary Ann OR call: 402-421-8264

2nd Annual Eunice Harrington Award Announced

LINCOLN -- The memory of Eunice Harrington was honored at the Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church of Nebraska when the session presented its second annual award named for the long-time York County resident. This year's recipient was Deanna Holland of the Blue River District United Methodist Women.

The award's namesake, Harrington, served as president of the largest women's organization in the world, the United Methodist Women's Society of Christian Service (later the United Methodist Women). The busy mother and grandmother spent time serving in numerous other capacities, attending General Conference in 1952, 1960 and 1976. Harrington was active in missions and served on the board of Epworth Village , at one point as president.

This year's award recipient, Holland , has served United Methodist Women through local, district, conference and jurisdiction leadership positions. She is currently finishing her final year of tenure on the Blue River District team as vice president. She credits UMW for developing her communication skills by leading workshops, writing skits, publishing newsletters, editing the Conference Annual Report and creating flyers and pamphlets. It has been one of her goals to have members recognize they are, "doing God's work through a most exceptional organization."

Holland has expanded her personal concepts of mission through experiences at Red Bird Mission, Lydia Patterson Institute, McCurdy School, Epworth Village, Inc. and National Assembly. She praises her fellow UMWs for giving her countless opportunities to travel, learn, meet other people and above all, to serve.

Nominees for the 2010 Eunice Harrington Award were Jenelle Erb, Peggy Walters, Mickey Aruffo, Roxanne Royster and Lorelei Edwards.

The Eunice Harrington Award is on permanent display at Epworth Village , a mission close to Harrington's heart. Her legacy at Epworth continues with her granddaughter Abbi Kleinschmidt (Epworth Village Foundation Board President).

The first recipient of the Harrington award was Anna Haverty of Nebraska City.

There were 93 who attended from the Nebraska Conference, one of which was Art Swarthout who is a retired Pastor from the Nebraska Conference. It was an exciting time for United Methodist Women.
