On Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011, the first snow of the winter was falling in Blue Hill as members of the Blue Hill United Methodist Church set out to continue their mission to Rethink Church. The goal was to bring Christmas cheer to the 44 residents of a residential facility, LifeQuest, in downtown Blue Hill.

What a difference a suggestion made in the lives of a number of members of Omaha St. Paul UMC. It all started in the spring of 2011 with Pastor Kurt Stecker asking the Missions and Social Justice Team if they would agree to take the lead in sponsoring a refugee family if approved by the Church Council.

Bishop Ann Scherer-Simpson joined twelve other women clergy from several denominations to work on a local Habitat for Humanity build on May 24. The group worked on the job site in the morning and in the warehouse in the afternoon, framing. The "Lincoln Clergy Women Build Day' was part of the Lincoln/Lancaster County Habitat for Humanity Women Build program. Joining the Bishop on the build crew were Pastor Jamie Norwich McLennan, First UMC, Lincoln, and Pastor Kara James, St. Mark's UMC, Lincoln. Pastor Jan Soule, St. Paul's, UMC, Lincoln provided several lunches for the build crew.

Claudia Cervantes is from Juraez, Mexico, and is a 2010 graduate of the Lydia Patterson Institute, a United Methodist-supported school in El Paso, Texas. A visit to Nebraska in June 2010 changed the course of her life, and through the generosity of the churches of the Missouri River District, she was able to attend nursing school at Nebraska Methodist College in Omaha.

On March 11, 6-year-old Sami Baltzell of Ogallala watched the news with her family and saw the devastation in Japan caused by the earthquake and tsunami. She asked many questions about what happened there and expressed sadness for the families and their losses, and then she decided she wanted to help.

The Tree of Life Ministry in Mission, S.D., is responsible for repairing and preparing 4000 Native American homes in South Dakota that have been flooded. The waters are expected to fully recede in August. They asked the Valentine UMC's men's group to help gather furnishings and appliances to assist in their ministry; the men took the request to heart.
