The Rev. Jamie Norwich McLennan passes a box to Tom Stanley as they load 150-plus boxes filled with health kits onto a truck bound for the UMCOR Sager Brown Depot in Baldwin, La. The kits were collected at Lincoln First UMC over a three-week period.

Health Kit collection under way, driver James Taylor to make 10 stops in two days

The pick-up locations and times have been confirmed for the collection of health kits for United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR).

United Methodists and community groups around Nebraska have collected and assembled UMCOR Health Kits to be picked up and delivered to the Sager Brown Depot, in Baldwin, La., with final distribution to Haiti. The kits, valued at about $12 each, contain everything from towels and washcloths to sterile bandages and bar soap. They will be distributed to those who have been forced to leave their homes as a result of the recent disaster.

The Sager Brown Depot is the headquarters for UMCOR's relief supply operations. Approximately $4 million in supplies are shipped each year from the Baldwin campus to disaster locations around the globe. More than 2,000 volunteers visit Sager Brown each year to help make these shipments happen.

James Taylor of Soucie Trucking in Cambridge, Neb., has volunteered his services; he started in Cambridge on the morning of Tuesday, Feb. 9, and will make a total of 10 stops before arriving at Sager Brown on Friday morning. Please keep Taylor in your prayers.

Around 2,800 health kits were collected at Grand Island Faith on Tuesday, and approximately 3,000 at both Lincoln First UMC and Omaha First UMC on Wednesday, Feb. 10.

The complete list of stops is attached below.

One Great Hour of Sharing Sunday set for March 14

When donations started to pour in for Haiti earthquake relief, the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) was able to apply 100 percent of the monies directly to relief for the people of Haiti. This was made possible through gifts to One Great Hour of Sharing, which lays the foundation for all of UMCOR's work by covering the "costs of doing business." In other words, all gifts designated to specific programs can go 100 percent to those programs because UMCOR's basic expenses are already covered.

One Great Hour of Sharing is one of six churchwide Special Sundays scheduled for 2010, it will be observed on March 14. These "Special Sundays" are opportunities to share beyond our regular offerings. As stated on www.umcgiving.org, "When we give from the heart, we receive unexpected blessings--especially the joy of making a difference in someone's life."

The other Special Sundays scheduled in 2010 are:
- Native American Ministries Sunday—April 18
- Peace with Justice Sunday—May 30
- World Communion Sunday—Oct. 3
- United Methodist Student Day Sunday—Nov. 28

Woodburn describes how scripture and prayer led them to tithe, and to depend on God to provide for their needs.

The attendees of the 100th birthday celebration of the Boy Scouts of America, sponsored by the UMMen of the Prairie Rivers District, and held at Beaver Crossing UMC on Feb. 6.

Scoutmasters and UMMen celebrate 100 years of scouting

Boy Scouts of America (BSA) is 100-years-old this year. The United Methodist Men (UMMen) of Nebraska helped Scoutmasters and their spouses celebrate at the Beaver Crossing United Methodist Church on Feb. 6. Forty people enjoyed the evening dinner, program and recognitions, complete with a birthday cake.

All 23 scoutmasters of the Prairie Rivers District, Cornhuster Council, BSA, were honored with certificates and given two devotional books for their troops. Spouses received a special gift pen for all their support. Chris Collins, district executive, and Rene Monarez, scouting executive, were also recognized and honored. The dinner and program were sponsored by the UMMen of the Prairie Rivers District.

A message of appreciation was read from Bishop Ann B. Sherer-Simpson. Master of Ceremonies Duane Daake, scouting/youth coordinator for both the Nebraska Conference and the Prairie Rivers District, and Larry Ulmer, UMMen president, Prairie Rivers District, expressed the church men's heartfelt thanks to the scoutmasters and the support of the spouses as these commitments result in boys' lives being positively affected.

This message was amplified by the keynote speaker, Brian Bresnahan, crop consultant from Stromburg, and an Eagle Scout himself. Bresnahan focused on the skills and character traits being taught by the Scoutmasters. Especially how these skills and traits served him well as an infantry major in the U.S. Marine Corps. Bresnahan, now retired, served in three war zones and related several stories about helping the Iraqi people and what is expected of a leader. He gave credit to the scoutmasters for their important part in molding boys into men.

Learn more about causes of poverty and long-term solutions

As Nebraska churches, community groups and school children continue to assemble health kits to send to Haiti, it is also the work of the church to ask deeper questions about Haiti's extreme poverty that has devastated this country long before the earthquake.

Bread for the World, a national Christian-based citizen's movement to influence our national decision makers on hunger issues, is endorsed by the United Methodist Committee on Relief. Go to www.bread.org and click on Rick Steve's op-ed in "USA Today" about long-term solutions for Haiti's grinding poverty. Along with much needed direct service through health kits and financial donations, encourage your church to learn more about structural poverty.
