Loup City United Methodist Church celebrates 125 years

The people of the Loup City United Methodist Church held their 125 year celebration of the construction of the first Methodist Church in Sherman County last Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008. A special church service by the Rev. Barbara Spangler included participation by District Superintendent the Rev. Secundo Morales and former pastors the Rev. Dwight Kemling, Rev. Earl Reed and Rev. Ralph Ertes. Music was provided by an alumni choir of past and current choir members. During the service the stained glass window mounted in the yard in front of the Church was dedicated and a short history of its original use in the Presbyterian Church built in 1906 was given by Virginia Phelps. The church service was well attended by current and former members and friends of the United Methodist Church in Loup City.

After the church service, a pot luck lunch was provided by local church members and was followed by a presentation of the history of the United Methodist Church in Loup City by local church historian Dennis Welty. Afterwards, there was a sharing of past memories and fellowship. A special 125 year anniversary cake with ice cream was also provided.

According to church and county records, the first church service in Loup City was conducted by the Rev. William Willard of Kearney in the fall of 1873 in the Rosseter Hotel. On May 28, 1881, the Loup City Charge West Nebraska Mission of the Methodist Episcopal Church first elected a board of three trustees. On March 18, 1882, the Methodist Episcopal Church of Loup City, Neb. was officially organized with election of a new board of seven trustees. The land was purchased for a church building at the present location at 6th and L St. on June 30, 1883. The Rev. Asbury Collins laid the cornerstone dated Oct. 1883, for the first church building and the dedication occurred on June 8, 1884.

The original church building was damaged in a storm and rebuilt in 1906 with a basement, east wing and large windows added. On Nov. 11, 1906, the church reopened with a special service which included Gov. John H. Mickey who helped organize a Methodist Church in Polk County. This church building was in continual use until 1996 when it was torn down and the present brick church building was constructed debt-free. A special plaque was presented to all trustees—past, present and future—who are responsible for maintaining the church building and facilities.

The Loup City United Methodist Church wishes to thank all supporters of the church through these 125 years who have allowed the United Methodist Church to maintain a house of worship and to serve the community.

Second mile giving requested, special Thanksgiving offering for hurricane and storm relief

Congregations are encouraged to look at the many ways in which their lives are blessed and are reminded of all the great work Mission Share dollars (formerly called apportionments) contribute to in our conference. DVD resources are available for your church to feature this work during your worship service or other appropriate times. A new DVD will be coming in the next few weeks.

Second mile giving is the giving asked of congregations over and above the conference, district and local church askings. In November, churches are asked to consider a "second mile" offering to help pastors and congregations in Texas. Hundreds of churches and pastors have been devastated in the Texas Conference. Photos are available on the Texas Conference Web site.

A Thanksgiving offering, taken sometime during November, can be a tangible way for Nebraska churches to extend their help to local churches in Texas.

Women's Division head to Congress: "Act justly for families in U.S. financial crisis"

    by Yvette Moore*

In a Sept. 19 letter to Congressional leaders, Women's Division Deputy General Secretary Harriett Jane Olson reminded legislators of their duty to represent families and children as they address the global financial crisis spurred by the collapse of several Wall Street giants. Ms. Olson wrote to Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), chair of the House Financial Services Committee, and Rep. Christopher Dodd (D-Conn.), chair of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, after reports of a government plan to rescue banks and other financial institutions failing under the home mortgage meltdown.

"We call upon you to keep before you the faces of families and children whose future will be determined by the decisions you make," Ms. Olson wrote. "We pray that you will look out for the future of families and children even if it requires action that is not in the interest of the powerful corporations."

Ms. Olson reminded the legislators of the financial crises faced by women and children in recent months as families lost homes, pensions and jobs. She called for bi-partisan short-term and long-term action that would aid families facing foreclosure and bankruptcy to retain ownership of their homes. Ms. Olson also called for:

  • Aid for workers hurt by the market collapse;
  • Increased consumer protection and disclosure of financial transactions; and
  • Enhanced regulation, cooperation and oversight of financial regulator agencies such as the Securities and Exchange Commission.

  • "You are in our prayers," Ms. Olson wrote. "We do not believe that ensuring corporate survival at the expense of the families of the United States is adequate, nor do we believe it is necessary. By providing homeowners with time and options to restructure loans and avoid foreclosure, by rolling back unworkable bankruptcy provisions and by preventing speculative trading, excess profit taking and grotesque officer and director pay, you can ensure the well being of women and children across the United States."

The Women's Division of the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries is the national policy-making arm of the nearly 800,000-member United Methodist Women organization. Each year members raise nearly $20 million for programs to improve the lives of women, children and youth.

*Yvette Moore is an executive secretary for communications with the Women's Division.
