Robert Martin leads clergy session in workshop on covenant
The Rev. Dr. Robert K. Martin, the Lovett H. Weems, Jr., associate professor of church leadership and practical theology at Saint Paul School of Theology, spoke during the Thursday morning workshop at the clergy special session at Lincoln St. Mark's UMC. His topic was how to engage in effective covenant relationships.Martin said both baptism and communion are covenant relationships, because they are "pools or baptismal fonts of relationship" and the intensity grows the greater the depth of the pool or the strength of the relationship.
He said he wants to frame a process that helps people ask the kinds of questions with the level of intensity that will help people immerse each other in the water of relationships, and share the body and blood of Christ.
The purpose of gathering in Christ in covenant is to be the church—more fully, more completely, more intensely; and to be a vibrant, vital, renewing church-within-church.
Martin said the purposes of a covenant group include: to be a crucible that intensifies discipleship; to be a crucible that develops leaders and that intensifies leadership; to manifest the divine life that creates, sustains and redeems; and to be an icon of the body of Christ, the church, to the church.
Attached below are the PowerPoint presentation and handout from the workshop.

Upcoming Marriage Encounter dates
A Marriage Encounter Weekend can help you enrich your marriage. It is designed for a man and woman who are married; the weekend is for couples of all ages, stages and faiths, who sincerely want to grow and live out vows made on their wedding day.Marriage Encounter helps you examine where you are in your relationship with each other, think about where you want to be and plan how to get there. This process encourages you to identify weak and strong points of your relationship and understand where you are in your thoughts about marriage. Couples often make meaningful discoveries about each other and the possibilities for their future together.
This is accomplished through a series of presentations that guide you on a discovery process of new and positive ways of looking at your marriage. Presenters are dedicated couples who are certified to present special communication techniques and scripture-based ideas about marriage and witness about their own marriages in light of those ideas. They are not marriage counselors. After each session, you and your spouse are given the opportunity to reflect and share with each other in private, away from the group.
The Encounter weekend usually begins Friday evening and concludes about 4 p.m. Sunday. Encounter is a not-for-profit organization, it is a "faith ministry," and each couple will be asked to send a reservation fee to reserve their place. Couples will be given the opportunity to contribute to the cost of their weekend, plus an extra gift if possible. Costs include meals, room reservation and administrative expenses. We only ask that couples give what they can because we do not want any couple to miss the weekend or experience the benefits to their relationship.
Marriage Encounter is the largest marriage enhancement program in the world. It is the official marriage program of The United Methodist Church and is affiliated with the General Board of Discipleship.
